RAM is the acronym for Random Access Memory, the part of a computer that holds running programs and data being used. The amount that isn't currently in use is unused RAM! Depending on the operating system, version, program used to measure it, etc. it may also be called available RAM or free memory or any such combination.
OH! Sorry, I couldn't resist.
Unused RAM is a way for one man, me, Matt Payne, to turn an interest in computers and passion for keeping old things running into something that could help people. The actual legal company was formed to get access to benefits like being able to offer donation receipts and to participate in Microsoft's Third Party Refurbisher program, but don't be fooled. It's still just me on the floor of the living room surrounded by glowing laptops, coordinating pick-ups and deliveries around my normal M-F work schedule.
I grew up and spent most of my life in Old Saybrook until buying my first house a few feet over the line into Westbrook. I was always a bit of a computer nerd, but perhaps more importantly I have an extreme passion for fixing things. Sometimes it's to save money, sometimes it's just because it seems irrational to throw out something that's so close to being perfectly usable. I keep cars running way longer than they should, I only buy phones that I can take apart, and I almost exclusively buy refurbished or used technology.
I work in automation largely as a programmer so as much as computers were already an interest of mine, I now find myself surrounded by them. It was only a matter of time until I accepted my lot in life as a nerd, but it was only in 2020 that it really sunk in how lucky I am to even have the opportunity to be a nerd.
I don't have many talents so I really didn't know what I could do to really help people until this idea was all but handed to me on a silver platter. How could I turn down playing with computers in a way that could change the course of someone's life for the better, to literally hand someone a tool that could give them a better chance to go to college, to find a job, to be creative, or to find their inspiration in life? It's too easy, too much fun, too perfect to not do it.
