I got the idea to do this totally by chance. One day a friend from work offered me two old broken laptops to see if I could do anything with them. I had DIY projects in mind like pulling out webcams and monitors to do cool things. Then, maybe a day or two later and totally unrelated, a neighbor named Charlotte offered me another old laptop and suggested maybe I could find a kid who could use it for school. I looked into it and there was just enough of it going on to suggest it could work, but it was still rare enough that I felt I could make a valuable contribution in my free time.
I found a Hartford Courant article about a CT teacher doing this same thing and got in touch to see if I could get some tips and inspiration. After speaking with Mark Prelli, I decided to jump in.
